Background
I have been a keen swimmer since I learnt to swim at the age of 4 living in Bahrain. The Bahrain British Club had an excellent programme for teaching and developing young swimmers.
I was then able to improve my swimming skills in Tenerife a good number of years later. I trained in Puerto de la Cruz at the Club Natación Martiánez where there was an olympic sized 50m outdoor pool.
While doing my A'levels in Winchester I trained with the Penguins swimming club and was occasionally selected for a few events. Unfortunately, at this time I discovered that I had stopped growing about a foot short of what I needed to become a decent swimmer.
Since then I have swum regularly at irregular intervals.

In Apr 2009 I managed to do the full 5000m distance in the annual Swimathon in aid of Marie Curie Foundation. I finished in a time of 1:36:56, not bad for an old man. Ranking: Overall 736/2929; Males 453/1512; Age 40-49 189/691; Males 40-49 142/413.
In Aug 2009 I did my first ever Open Water Swims. Firstly, 1 mile across Weymouth Bay timed at 34:30 - but don't believe it was a carefully measured mile. In Sep 2009 I did the GreatBig OpenWaterSwim a 1-mile tagged swim at Dorney Lake, the 2012 Olympic Rowing venue. Time was 28:46, an improvement on GLS and I was placed: Overall 41/97; 4/7 Males 45-49. Then a couple of weeks later I swam in the One Mile Swim at Roadford Lake, Devon. A charity event in aid of Hospiscare with no official timing but my watch stopped at 32:01.
During Sep-Dec 2009 once again I completed a Channel Swim distance in aid of Aspire.
